Samantha Cherry Engraving
Sam Cherry’s studio is located in Greensboro, NC. Her life passion is art and engraving. From a young age Sam was focused on her love of expressing what she saw in the world through art. She carried this with her into her career as an artist and engraver. She attended honors art classes throughout her time at Ragsdale High School. After graduating she attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and received her Bachelors in Fine Arts with a concentration in Design in 2013.
She has studied many aspects of art from ceramics, graphic design, print making, painting, metal etching, color theory, art history and letters, signs and symbols; all of which are evident in her work as an engraver.
Sam studied the 'Basics of Engraving' with Mike Dubber, a FEGA Master Engraver during the spring of 2014. She found her love of traveling and other cultures while she did her 6 month engraving apprenticeship at the Bottega Incisioni Di Cesare Giovanelli in Italy 2014 and 2015. During this apprenticeship she had the opportunity to study under various Engravers including Dario Cortini, Mauro Turrini, and Daniele Pozzi. She then followed up with an ‘Intermediate Engraving’ class with Mike Dubber in 2015.
She was invited to and attended the Grand Master's Class with Mike Dubber in 2019 at GRS in Emporia Kansas where she learned gold inlay. She attended the Arabesque Scroll class with Sam Alfano at GRS in Emporia Kansas in 2022 where she learned Arabesque scroll and to use a microscope with her engraving. She recently took the Advanced Winchester Floor plate class with Sam Alfano at GRS in August 2024 where she advanced with her gold inlay and learned gold overlay. She engraved the Elizabeth Colt Legacy Foundation (ECLF) show gun for 2024 and will be engraving the ECLF show gun for 2025.
She is able to work with a variety of tools and techniques such as bulino for delicate animal work, hammer and chisel, and pneumatic engraving for scroll work. She can create most types of scroll and mimic master engravers.
Guns are a part of Sam's upbringing and family business. Her father, Kevin Cherry is the proprietor of Cherry’s Fine Guns, a notable retail location for firearm enthusiasts in Greensboro NC. This staple in the community has existed since 1929 when it was in Geneseo, Illinois. Before Kevin, her Grandfather Robert “Bob” Earl Patrick Cherry and prior to him, her Great-grandfather Earl Patrick Cherry owned and operated it. It moved with the family and they continue to work to keep up with the trends of today’s market and customers.
Sam continues her pursuit of combining nostalgia with art through her work as a firearms engraver although she engraves all types of metal items such as rings, bracelets, necklaces, pendants, watches, belt buckles, lighters, keychains, bottle openers, fishing rods, name tags, animal name tags, memorial tags, knives, swords, and Apple products. If it’s metal and she can engrave it she’s happy to do so. She currently serves as the Fire Arms Engraving Guild (FEGA) Secretary.
Sam began teaching the Basics of Hammer and Chisel engraving (Metal Engraving 101 and 201) in July 2023 at Montgomery Community College in Troy NC. She now offers week long courses of Metal engraving 101 and 201 throughout the year as well as fall and spring semester courses.
